The International Olympic Committee has banned Russia from competing at the 2018 Winter Olympics.
The country’s government officials are forbidden to attend, its flag will not be displayed at the opening ceremony and its anthem will not sound.Russian athletes can still compete “under strict conditions” as an “Olympic Athlete from Russia [OAR]” and the official record books will forever show that Russia won zero medals.
The ban was put in place after a long investigation exposed the country for backing a systematic doping program.
Russia could refuse the offer to compete as neutrals and boycott the Games. President Vladimir Putin has previously said it would be humiliating for Russia to compete without national symbols.
The Games begin February 9th in Pyeongchang, South Korea.
