Researchers have designed a quieter airplane toilet.

The reason they’re so loud is because it takes a lot of suction to flush a toilet without using much water. The ones now move air and water at 300 miles per hour, almost half the speed of sound, through pipes are at 90 degree angles, with valves that open and slam shut quickly. It’s like a roar.

The new design would add a more gradual curve to the pipe, and move the valve farther down.
