Power went out in New York City on Saturday evening and wasn’t restored until shortly after midnight.
About 72,000 people in New York for a few hours Saturday night. Regular people directed traffic, Broadway shows were cancelled, J-Lo’s show at Madison Square Garden was evacuated, Times Square was dark. Turns out, there was a malfunction at an electrical substation, and that the malfunction temporarily knocked out other substations.
It kicked back on right in the middle of the power company’s press conference about it. Crowds erupted into cheers in some places.

Finland hosted the first ever Heavy Metal Knitting Championship over the weekend. It was about as bizarre as you’re thinking it was.
Competitors are on stage knitting and dancing while a heavy metal band performs behind them. It’s part cosplay too, because they’re all wearing crazy costumes. The winners came all the way from Japan and featured a couple of sumo wrestlers and a “knitting man” wearing a traditional Japanese kimono.
Organizers said it went so well they’re going to do it again next summer.
