5 Things You Need To Know

February 13th is the 44th day of the year. There are 322 days remaining until the end of the year.

French language schools in the province will be closed today.

Sainte Catherine, Saint Philippe, Sainte Marie, Saint Francis & ESPC will be closed for the day.

Next Friday all four major Ontario education unions will go on strike on the same day. It’s the first time since 1997. According to the unions, it’s the first time they have all conducted this kind of job action on the same day since they protested the cuts to education by the government of then-Premier Mike Harris.

The February 21 strike will keep an estimated two million students out of class.

The 2nd Annual Soups On fundraiser is on Family Day Monday at the Spirit & Life Centre (184 Wellington St., Chatham) from 11-2.

For a donation, come by and try some soup from over 30 local restaurants.

Money raised goes towards the Salvation Army of Chatham-Kent and Chatham Hope Haven mens shelter.

Everyone is welcome.

A record number of patients received organ transplants in Ontario last year.

Health teams performed 1,386 organ transplants and 684 deceased and living patients donated organs, which represents a 13 per cent increase over a year earlier. Both transplants and donations represent new records in the province.

The increase is attributed to technological and medical advances that allow for the transplantation of organs from donors who previously would have been excluded. Such newly available donors accounted for 21 per cent of all organ donors in 2019.

There’s a new Guinness World Record for the Largest Aerial Firework, and the video has gone viral.

It weighed over a ton and was launched into the air Saturday night at the Steamboat Springs Winter Carnival in Colorado.

It was a 62-inch, 2,797-pound firework shell, and it was shot 2,200 feet into the air. It beat the previous record of 2,397 pounds that was set in the United Arab Emirates in 2018.

In shoe news…

Nike is releasing another pair of self lacing sneakers this weekend. The Nike Adapt BB 2.0 sneakers are going to sell for $400. Resellers are expected to sell the shoes for $565.

And KFC just teamed up with Crocs to make a special line of shoes.

The soles look like a KFC bucket, there are pictures of fried chicken printed on the shoes and there’s a fake drumstick attached to the top of both shoes.

And they’re chicken-scented.

If you’re interested, the shoes will be released sometime this spring, and you can sign up now on Crocs.com to get an alert as soon as they go on sale. They’re going to cost $60.
