The game was the first in the post-season between the teams in 42 years.
A long-awaited playoff meeting between the two teams was overshadowed by a scary incident in which John Tavares suffered an inadvertent knee to the head and had to be stretchered off the ice.
“He’s conscious and communicating well,” Toronto head coach Sheldon Keefe said. “The tests he’s had so far have come back clear. He’s going to remain in hospital overnight to undergo further tests.
Game 2 is Saturday at 7.
“We all believe in each other and we’ll be ready to go next game.”

The annual Ford Fireworks display will return on June 28th, but like last year, there will be no in-person viewing in downtown Windsor and Detroit.
Like last year, the fireworks will be a TV-only event again due to the pandemic.
This year is the 63rd year the event has been held. Last year, the fireworks were postponed but then held later in the summer at an undisclosed location.
The annual fireworks display is expected to return to in-person viewing in 2022.
