5 Things You Need To Know

July 14th is the 195th day of 2021. There are 170 days remaining until the end of the year.


The Chatham Concert Band has been given the go ahead to hold concerts in the park this Summer.

Concerts will run beginning Wednesday, August 4th and will wrap up September 1st in Tecumseh Park.

This will be the 94th consecutive season, since the band did squeeze in two unadvertised “pop-up” concerts in Chatham late last summer (with the blessing of Public Health) before the pandemic went south again.

Just one new positive COVID-19 cases reported Tuesday by Chatham-Kent Public Health.

There was 1 recovery, total active case count stays at 9.

There were 146 positive cases across Ontario Tuesday. It is the fifth straight day the province has reported fewer than 200 new infections.


 Toronto Blue Jays first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. was named MVP of the MLB All Star Game.

He had 2 runs batted in, including a 468 foot home run in the third inning.

Vladdy is the first Blue Jay to be named All Star MVP, and the youngest at 22 years, 119 days old, in history.

Toronto begins the second half of the season on Friday vs Texas. The Jays are still playing home games in Buffalo, but there is a proposal in front of the federal government to have them back in the Rogers Centre for the beginning of August.


The Canadian Olympic Committee has announced the 371 athletes who will compete in Tokyo starting July 23rd.

There were 225 women and 146 men named to the team. Canada’s contingent will be the largest since the 1984 Summer Games in Los Angeles.

Tokyo’s Games scheduled for last summer were delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Locally, Ridgetown’s Chris von Martels will make his second games appearance in Equestrian – Dressage.

Blenheim’s Breanne Nicholas will make her first Olympic appearance in Women’s Rugby.

Chatham’s Bridget Carleton also makes her first Olympic team for Women’s Basketball. Miranda Ayim was born in Chatham, but grew up in London will also be on the Women’s Basketball team. Her third Olympic Games.

Bothwell’s Nick Wammes will compete in Cycling representing Canada at the games for the first time.

Blenheim’s Alex Hyndman will represent Canada at the Paralympic Games in Men’s Handcycle. His first Paralympics. The Paralympics follow the Olympic Games, taking place from August 24th to September 5th.


The LEGOLAND Hotel in New York is almost open for business.

The hotel has announced it will open for bookings beginning on August 6th. On Friday the LEGOLAND New York Resort, a LEGO themed theme park, opened.

All of the rooms are decorated with Pirate, Kingdom, Lego Friends and Lego Ninjago themes that feature separate sleeping areas for kids. Activities for hotel guests include visits from Lego characters, a heated outdoor pool and creative workshops for kids.
