A famous portrait of Sir Winston Churchill has been stolen from the Château Laurier hotel in Ottawa.
The portrait had been swapped out with an unsigned copy version. A staff member noticed the picture frame of the portrait seemed a little off.
Yesterday, after hotel officials analyzed pictures sent in by members of the public with the portrait in the background, they have determined that the photograph was stolen in late 2021 or early 2022, about eight months ago.
The picture was taken by famed photographer Yousuf Karsh and signed. The portrait was photographed in 1941, it depicts a scowling Churchill in the Speaker of the House of Commons’ chambers shortly after he made a speech to the Canadian Parliament during the Second World War.
The stolen copy was part of a collection of Karsh portraits that have been displayed at the hotel for decades. He is widely considered one of the greatest portrait photographers of the 20th century.
Oh, no!
The famed portrait of scowling Winston Churchill by Yousuf Karsh is missing from Ottawa.
I hope it is returned asap.
