NASA‘s Artemis I mission to the moon is set to launch this morning.
It’s been nearly 50 years since the last Apollo astronauts went to the lunar surface, and this uncrewed mission will set the stage for humans to make the journey in 2024 and 2025 aboard Artemis II and Artemis III.
Canadian technology will be a big part of this mission. In under a decade, scientists hope to have developed a space station called the Lunar Gateway to serve as a stepping stone for travel to Mars and beyond, and Canada is developing a rover to explore the Moon’s surface.
Blasting off from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, using the most powerful rocket that humans have ever built, the unmanned spacecraft will be sent into space to orbit the Moon and collect data and test the capabilities of the spacecraft.
Only mannequins will be inside the Orion, but the spacecraft is designed to support humans, making this first test a crucial one for future missions. After the spacecraft completes its 42 day mission in space, it will return to Earth, splashing down in the ocean to test how future astronauts will get home.

In the event that technical issues or weather delay the launch attempt, NASA has back-up launch dates scheduled for September 2 and September 5.
A mint condition Mickey Mantle baseball card sold for $12.6 million Sunday.
That sets a record as the most ever paid for sports memorabilia.
The previous record of $9.3 million was just set a few months ago for the jersey worn by Diego Maradona in soccer’s 1986 World Cup.
Over the last few months, the sports memorabilia market has been hot. A century-old Honus Wagner baseball card recently sold for $7.25 million in a private sale. And last month, the heavyweight boxing belt won by Muhammad Ali in 1974’s “Rumble in the Jungle” sold for about $6.2 million.
The owner of the 1953 Mickey Mantle card bought it for $50,000 in 1991.
The buyer of the card was not revealed.

Time Out has released its second annual roundup of the world’s coolest streets.
This year’s list has 33 streets, three more than the first list in 2021.
The top street is Rue Wellington, in Montreal’s Verdun neighborhood. The street has “killer cocktail bars, stellar brunch spots, some of the best sandwiches in town and even a sandy urban beach,” plus it’s becoming pedestrian-only in 2023, which adds more “cool points.”
The United States didn’t come in first place, but it holds the largest number of streets on the list — Miami’s Calle Ocho, New York City’s MacDougal Street and Chicago’s Wentworth Avenue all make the cut.
Five of the top 10 streets are in Asia and the Pacific.
