October 27, 2022
October 27th is the 300th day of the year. There are 65 days remaining until the end of the year.
Today is CHiRP Day in C-K!
Firefighters from all 19 fire stations, along with community partners will be taking to the streets, knocking on doors, and visiting homes to check your alarms.
Book a CHiRP Check by visiting CKFire.ca or calling 311.
During a CHiRP Home Alarm Check, firefighters visit your home to ensure your smoke & carbon monoxide alarms are working, correctly located & not expired. Have alarms that need replacing? We can help with that too.
If you see a fire truck on your street, come over for a truck tour from one of the firefighters.
Tomorrow is the last day to donate to the Salvation Army’s Operation Cover Up.
Friday is the end of the collection period. If you have any new or gently-used winter coats – specifically children and plus sized, they’re being collected now. Coats can be dropped at Salvation Army locations in Chatham, Wallaceburg and Ridgetown and Jiffy Lube on Keil Drive.
Coats will be distributed to those that need them beginning Tuesday, November 2nd.
On Monday, Family Service Kent is inviting everyone to Hidden Hills Golf and Country Club for a Volunteer Showcase.
With the pandemic, the last few years has had a major impact on the nonprofits in Chatham-Kent. These organizations rely heavily on volunteers to provide vital services to the community.
This will be a one-stop information session to show the community what volunteer positions are available.
The Volunteer Expo Showcase CK is open to anyone who is looking to volunteer 2-6pm.
Gas prices are expected to jump for the second day in a row.
Prices are expected to rise 7 cents today, which, combined with Wednesday’s 6-cent increase, will bring prices up by a total of 13 cents in just two days. The average in Ontario will sit right around 173.9 cents per litre; that’s the highest in the last 10 weeks.
That’s nothing if you live in Peterborough, they could see their local stations shoot up by 22 cents this morning.
Locally this morning (as of 5:30am): 169.9 in Chatham, Blenheim and Wallaceburg, 155.9 in Tilbury.
The winner has been announced from last months Florida Python Challenge.
A 19-year-old South Florida man captured 28 Burmese pythons during the 10-day competition.
The competition was created to increase awareness about the threats the invasive snakes pose to the state’s ecology. Because the snakes have virtually no natural enemies in the Everglades they have decimated native populations of mammals, birds and other reptiles. A female python can lay as many as 100 eggs a year.
Matthew Concepcion was among the 1,000 participants from 32 states, Canada and Latvia who participated. 231 of the unwanted pythons were removed.
Concepcion won the $10,000 Ultimate Grand Prize. He says he may use some of his earnings to buy a powerful lighting setup for his truck, which will help him spot more snakes.
Another competitor won the $1,500 grand prize for removing the longest python, at just over 11 feet (3.3 meters).
