5 Things You Need To Know

December 13th is the 347th day of the year. There are 18 days remaining until the end of the year.

The headache of driving on the 401 through Toronto has lessened, slightly.

About 18 kilometres of the 401 between Mississauga’s Credit River and Milton have reopened. That stretch of the 401 has been reconstructed and widened over the past three years, from only six lanes to as many as 12 lanes in some areas.

The cost of the reconstruction was $640 million.

Highway 401 is the busiest and most congested highway in North America. Approximately 180,000 vehicles on average per weekday on that stretch.

Infrastructure Ontario does say that final paving and finishing works will take place in the spring.

Today is Fergie Jenkins’ 80th birthday.

Born and raised in Chatham before starting his Major League Baseball career. He played from 1965 to 1983 for the Philadelphia Phillies, Chicago Cubs, Texas Rangers and Boston Red Sox.

A Cy Young winner for best pitcher, he won 20 or more games 7 times. He had over 3,000 strikeouts during his career and his 284 victories are the most by a black pitcher in major league history.

In the late 60’s, Fergie played basketball in the offseason with the Harlem Globetrotters.

Jenkins was the first Canadian to be inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1991; he remained the only one until Larry Walker’s induction in 2020.

Speaking of baseball…

The new Chatham IBL team is looking for a name.

The Intercounty Baseball League (IBL) is the top-level amateur baseball league in Canada. The Chatham team will start play in May 2024, at the Fergie Jenkins (Rotary Park) on Tweedsmuir Ave.

Fans are asked to submit a name for the team. Team names should include a local connection, family friendly and over the top fun. The fan that submits the winning name will win a family seasons pass.

Got an idea? Submit it here.

Team President Dom Dinelle joins CKMORNINGS at 8:40 this morning.
