The Royal Canadian Mint is issuing a new $2 coin with a black ring in honour of the late Queen Elizabeth II.

The coins are dated 2022 and will include the regular design elements of a $2 coin in addition to the black band, which is meant to symbolize a mourning armband. The centre of the coins stays gold, with the usual silver outside replaced by black nickel. The late Queen will be emblazoned as usual on one side, with the traditional polar bear by the other.

The Queen died in September after 70 years on the throne.

The Mint is creating nearly five million coins in an initial run, although more may be created if needed. The coins will enter the national coin distribution system Wednesday, and will get it us throughout the month as banks restock their $2 coin inventories.

Gas prices are expected to fall to their lowest level in a year with a 2 cent drop today down to an average of 138.9 per litre for most stations across Ontario.

Locally, as of 5:30 this morning: In Chatham it’s at 140.9/litre, 139.9 in Wallaceburg, 143 in Blenheim and 145 in Tilbury.

Philadelphia Cream Cheese is launching a version, without cheese.

Kraft has launched a plant-based cream cheese.

The plant-based cream cheese is now available at grocery stories in Atlanta, Houston, Miami and other locations in the Southeast U.S., with a wider rollout planned for summer 2023.

The Research and Development team focused on two major factors: Getting the product to melt and spread easily and making sure that it tastes like a dairy product.

You’ll pay for that plant based cream cheese; the suggested retail price is about 70% more than regular cream cheese.
