5 Things You Need To Know

July 17th is the 198th day of the year. There are 167 days remaining until the end of the year.

There’s a passport clinic in Tilbury today from 10-2 at the Knights of Columbus Hall.

The clinics are staffed by volunteers who will make sure all your forms are filled out correctly and all required documentation is included in your applications. The clinics are for first-time applications as well as renewals and children’s passports.

A photographer will also be on hand at each clinic to take passport photos, for a fee.

There are two more clinics this year; August 21, at Glad Tidings Community Church just south of Blenheim and on September 4 at Blessed Sacrament Church in Chatham.

Donors are needed!

There’s a blood donor clinic Wednesday at the Portuguese Canadian Club from 1-7pm.

No walk-in appointments are available. Book your appointment at Blood.ca, call 1-888-2-DONATE or use the apps.

If you’re unable to donate this week, the next clinic locally will also be July 25th at the Healthplex.

Another Powerball draw and no winner, so the jackpot grows again. Tonight’s draw is now up to $900 million.

The winner will have the option of getting paid out with yearly increments or a $465.1 million, one-time lump sum before taxes.

The jackpot will keep growing until someone wins.

There are no restrictions that prohibit Canadians from playing the Powerball lottery. Tickets can be bought online.

The 2024 Major League Baseball schedule was released Thursday, and now you can start planning your road trips.

Opening Day will be on Thursday, March 28, and the regular season will end on Sunday, September 29. The Toronto Blue Jays open the season in Tampa, that’ll be the start of a 10-game road trip as phase two renovations wrap up at the Rogers Centre. The Detroit Tigers will be in Chicago.

Toronto is in Detroit June 23-26, and then the Jays host the Tigers July 19-21.

Hunters in Florida have captured the longest Burmese python ever recorded.

The 19-foot, 125 pound python was caught near Naples. To put it in perspective, 19 feet is about the average height of an adult giraffe.

South Florida has now produced the two longest Burmese pythons on record. The previous record was 18-feet, 10-inches long, and that snake was caught about 35 miles west of Miami in October of 2020.

Pythons have wreaked havoc on local wildlife, thanks to the snakes scientists say that most of the fur-bearing animals in the Everglades are gone. More hunters will be tracking down these snakes during the Florida Python Challenge August 4-13.
