A mass migration home of wildfire evacuees in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, will begin today.

Sorkers in grocery stores, pharmacies, home-heating providers, and even some taxi drivers and daycare providers returned earlier this week preparing for the lifting of the evacuation order when all city residents will be allowed to return.

The evacuation order for Yellowknife and the nearby First Nation communities of Ndilo and Dettah was issued on August 16.

Residents have already been advised they should prepare to be self-reliant for 72 hours upon their return. The city is getting ready for people clearing three weeks of food out of their refrigerators.


You’d better BYOB (bring your own bag) if you’re hitting the LCBO from now on.

As of yesterday, the LCBO will no longer be using paper bags for your purchase. It was 15 years ago that they got rid of plastic bags. In addition to bringing your own reusable bags moving forward, customers will have the option to buy a reusable bag in-store, or use cardboard boxes or an 8-pack carrier for free.

The LCBO says the move will divert 2,665 tonnes of waste from landfill and save more than 188,000 trees every year.
