It’s Friday the 13th.

Considered the most unlucky day on the calendar in Western society. In Italy, Friday the 17th is considered a day of bad luck.

The maximum number of times that a Friday the 13th can occur in any given year is three, but it’s guaranteed to come up at least once a year. A Friday the 13th occurs during any month that begins on a Sunday.

In Ontario, motorcyclists head to Port Dover to celebrate. Typically, when a Friday the 13th lands in the summer months, the town can see up to 200,000 people arrive for the festivities.

This is the last of two Friday the 13ths in 2023; the other was back in January. In 2024 there are also two, the first comes on September 13, and the second is exactly 13 weeks later in December.

The Detroit Free Press Marathon is this weekend.

The race takes place on Sunday. The International Half and Marathon start at 7 and the U.S. Marathon starts at 10:30a.m.

The Detroit-Windsor Tunnel will be closed to traffic from 6:15 a.m. until 10:15 a.m. on Sunday.

The Ambassador Bridge will remain open to race runners and both commercial and passenger vehicles during the race. The bridge should be cleared of runners by 9:30 a.m.

23,000 runners will be participating.

Happy birthday to the cell phone.

The modern cell phone turns 40 today.

It was introduced in Chicago and demonstrated in a call to Alexander Graham Bell’s grandson in Berlin, Germany. The 1983 phone’s price was $3,995. In 1990, there were just over 5 million people in the country with cell phones. By 2000, that number was nearly 110 million. Now, 97% of North Americans have cell phones or smart phones.
