Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was voted Canada’s top athlete of the year on Monday.
The Northern Star Award recipient, formerly the Lou Marsh Trophy, was awarded to the 25-year-old from Hamilton. He had his best NBA season and lead the Canadian men’s team to a bronze-medal upset of the United States at the Basketball World Cup. Chatham’s Fergie Jenkins won the award in 1974.
Gilgeous-Alexander is the second basketball player to win the award after Steve Nash grabbed honours in 2005.
He beat out Edmonton Oilers superstar Connor McDavid, golfer and Canadian Open champion Nick Taylor, hammer thrower Camryn Rogers and swimmer Summer McIntosh for the award.

Today is Fergie Jenkins’ 81st birthday.
Born and raised in Chatham before starting his Major League Baseball career. He played from 1965 to 1983 for the Philadelphia Phillies, Chicago Cubs, Texas Rangers and Boston Red Sox.
A Cy Young winner for best pitcher, he won 20 or more games 7 times. He had over 3,000 strikeouts during his career and his 284 victories are the most by a black pitcher in major league history.
In the late 60’s, Fergie played basketball in the offseason with the Harlem Globetrotters.
Jenkins was the first Canadian to be inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1991; he remained the only one until Larry Walker’s induction in 2020.
Last Summer Chatham-Kent honoured Fergie with a replica statue that is on display outside the Civic Centre on King St., in Chatham.
Good chance to catch a meteor shower this week.
The Geminid meteor shower began back in November, but it peaks here in Canada early Thursday morning, between 2 – 6a.m. One of the best times to catch the meteor shower will be after 3am when the moon has set and the shower will be at its peak.
This meteor shower tends to have more meteors per hour than many others, it can produce up to 120 meteors per hour.
