5 Things You Need To Know

December 21st is the 355th day of the year. There are 10 days remaining until the end of the year.

It’s the shortest day of the year for anyone living in the Northern Hemisphere.

Winter begins today at 10:27p.m.

The winter solstice is the shortest day of the year, meaning the least amount of sunlight. We should get 9-9.5 hours of sunlight.

After today, the amount of daylight begins to increase and the days start getting longer.

The first day of spring is March 19th, 2024.

The Salvation Army Kettle campaign is winding down.

The goal is $500,000 for the year, so far, about 75% of that has been raised. The Red Kettle Campaign is the Salvation Army’s largest fundraiser to help finance the many services and programs offered to individuals and families in need throughout the year in Chatham-Kent.

Please make a donation, kettles are equipped to take debit and credit cards.

There are still a couple of volunteer shifts open. Call the Chatham-Kent Salvation Army at 519-437-1784 or 519-437-1769 or check out the Facebook page for info.

Kettles will be out until December 23rd at 8pm.

The Detroit Lions could clinch a playoff spot tonight.

Tonight’s Thursday Night Football matchup is between the Los Angeles Rams and New Orleans Saints.

Detroit will clinch a playoff spot if the Saints beat the Rams. If that doesn’t happen, they can still clinch a playoff spot if the Seahawks lose to the Tennessee Titans on Sunday afternoon.

The best-case scenario is that the Lions beat the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday afternoon in Minnesota. That would clinch the NFC North for the first time since 1993.

Fans of the other kind of football, soccer, will be happy to hear this.

Lionel Messi is coming to Toronto.

The MLS released its 2024 schedule on Wednesday and that included a game between Toronto FC and Inter Miami at BMO Field.

The match will take place on October 5, with kickoff time set for 7:30 p.m.

Messi plays Inter Miami. Toronto will also travel to Florida to take him on next season on July 17 at 7:30 p.m.

Ticket info will be announced in the coming days.

This is serious.

Nestlé Canada is issuing a voluntary recall of KitKat bars sold during the Halloween season.

Nestlé says that the treats were sold at retailers across Canada. No injuries or illnesses have been reported thus far.

They’ve recalled KitKat Halloween Scary Friends 40 Packs over reports of “potential plastic in the product which could pose a choking risk.”

If you’ve still got a stash of trick-or-treat candy, you can identify the potentially harmful individually wrapped bars by looking for the batch code 30610848, BB/MA 2024 MR 02.

Anyone with these products should throw them out and contact the company’s consumer services department for reimbursement.
