Today is Grimace’s birthday! He’s turning 52.

We all know and love the big purple Grimace, but what is he exactly? He is from Grimace Island and comes from a spectacularly huge family, which includes his Grandma Winky, aunts Millie and Tillie and, of course, Uncle O’Grimacey, who was once the Shamrock Shake’s mascot. Through Grimace lore it is believed that he is a taste bud, but McDonald’s has never confirmed that, only saying, “He is an enormous taste bud, but a taste bud nonetheless.”

The Grimace Shake was first introduced to McDonald’s menus across the U.S. last summer in celebration of his birthday and is now available to us in Canada as of May.
