It is Rail Safety Week. The initiative aims to raise awareness and promote safe practices around railways.

More than 2,100 people are injured or killed annually in crossing and trespassing incidents in North America. More than 60% of collisions occur at crossings equipped with lights and/or gates.

Some safety tips to keep in mind:

  • Always expect a train.
  • Stay alert around railroad tracks.
  • Trains have the right of way 100% of the time over pedestrians and vehicles, including police and emergency vehicles.
  • Trains overhang tracks. Stay 15 feet back from the tracks.
  • The average locomotive weighs about 400,000 pounds or 200 tons; it can weigh up to 6,000 tons. You or your car don’t stand a chance.
  • Trains can move on any track, in either direction at any time.

Another big win on Tuesday for the Detroit Tigers in their push for a playoff spot. The Tigers beat the Tampa Bay Rays 2-1. Detroit’s win and Minnesota Twins loss, put them two games up in the Wild Card standings. Detroit and Tampa will play again tonight at 6:40 at Comerica Park.

While the Tigers battle for the playoffs, the Toronto Blue Jays are celebrating hot dogs: Loonie Dogs to be specific. Every Tuesday home game at the Rogers Centre, Jays fans could purchase a hot dog for just a loonie.

Last night, Jays fans set a new franchise record for the most hot dogs bought in one season. More than 700,000 hot dogs were purchased this year during “Loonie Dogs” nights, passing last year’s record of 693,865.

There were 12 “Loonie Dogs” games this season. The most hot dogs bought in a game this year was 71,391 on August 6th. The all-time single-game record for hot dogs consumed was 76,627, set on August 29th, 2023.

The Blue Jays said the average number of hot dogs consumed a game this season is 56,541.

The Blue Jays are in last place in their division, but first in hot dogs.
