Tomorrow begins the Chinese New Year, the Year of the Rat.
Currently it’s the Year of the Pig, tomorrow will be the first day of 4717 on the Chinese calendar.
The Chinese New Year doesn’t fall on the same day every year. It’s a different day each year, celebrated during the second new moon after the Winter Solstice, usually between January 21st and February 20th.
A couple things you’re not supposed to do on Chinese New Year are: no sweeping or taking out the trash, because it’s like sweeping wealth away and dumping out good fortune. And washing your hair supposedly washes away your good luck too.
On the other hand, some things that are encouraged tomorrow are: lighting fireworks, wearing red, gifting people cash in red envelopes, and eating dumplings.
Tinder is adding a new panic button feature to trigger an alarm if something dangerous happens on a date.
Users will be able to hit a panic button, send check-ins to make sure they are safe and call for the police if trouble occurs.
If a Tinder member triggers the panic button they will receive a text message from dispatchers. If the user doesn’t respond to the message, dispatchers will then call them. If the Tinder user does not answer, the dispatcher will then notify the police.
The final two Zellers stores will close by the end of the month.
One is located in Ottawa, the other in Etobicoke. Both stores, which are stocked with discounted merchandise from the Bay, are set to close by the end of January.
Zellers, the once-mighty discount department store chain where “the lowest price was the law,” was established in London in 1931. In 1978, they were purchased by Hudson’s Bay Company. At it’s peak in 1999, there were 350 Zellers stores across Canada. In 2011, the Bay sold most of its remaining Zellers stores to Target, which abruptly shuttered its new Canadian outlets in 2015. All but a handful of the remaining 64 Zellers locations closed in 2013.
