5 Things You Need To Know

June 1st is the 152nd day of the year. There are 213 days remaining until the end of the year.

Welcome to June!

Temps expected to hit 32 today with loads of sunshine into the weekend.

With the warmer temperatures, the municipality is busy getting the local splashpads open for the season.

Bothwell Optimist Park, Dresden Kinsmen Park, Ridgetown Kiwanis Park, Thamesville Ferguson Park, Tilbury Knights of Columbus Park & Wheatley Area Complex opened in over the May long weekend.

Chatham Kingston Park and Mitchell’s Bay Park opened early this week.

Today the Blenheim Talbot Trail Splash Pad, Merlin Kinsmen Park, Wallaceburg Jaycee Park and Wallaceburg Colwell Park open to the public.

Another honour for Chatham’s Fergie Jenkins.

St. Mary’s is home of the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame and on June 17th roadway running through the property will be renamed Ferguson Jenkins Way, a nod to the Hall of Fame pitcher. It’s all part of the Hall of Fame’s induction weekend, beginning June 15th.

A statue in honour of Jenkins was erected outside Wrigley Field in Chicago last year and a replica will be erected in downtown Chatham next weekend.

During his 18-year career in the majors Jenkins pitched in 4,500 innings and recorded more than 3,000 strikeouts, one of only 11 players to reach those milestones. He is the first Canadian to win baseball’s Cy Young Award and the first Canadian to earn a place in Cooperstown.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have named a new General Manager.

Brad Treliving is the former Calgary Flames GM and replaces Kyle Dubas, who was let go by the Leafs on May 19 after five years at the helm.

Treliving is the son of Canadian businessman Jim Treliving, famous as one of the “dragons” on Dragons Den and one of the co-owners of Boston Pizza.

Canada will be the first country to print health warnings directly on individual cigarettes.

It’s part of the government’s efforts to help adults quit smoking while protecting youth and non-tobacco users from nicotine addiction. Labelling the tipping paper of individual cigarettes, little cigars, tubes, and other tobacco products will make it virtually impossible to avoid health warnings altogether.

The new regulations will take effect on August 1st, the exact messaging printed on cigarettes hasn’t been released.

Gas prices are expect to drop today.

The average price at the pumps in Ontario will fall 5 cents per litre today down to 159.9.

Locally, as of 5:30am: Chatham 161.5, Wallaceburg 156.2, Blenheim 161 and Tilbury 154.9
